Sri Kodandarama Temple Jatayupara
Sri Kodandarama Temple is a highly significant sacred shrine located atop the famous Jatayu Para (Jatayu Rock) in Chadayamangalam, Kollam district, Kerala. Built right next to the Jatayu Earth's Center sculpture, the temple stands at an altitude of approximately 1,000 feet above sea level.
The key features and mythology of this temple are provided below:
Mythology
According to belief, when Ravana was abducting Goddess Sita to Lanka, the noble bird Jatayu intercepted him. In the ensuing battle, Ravana struck Jatayu down, and he fell onto this rock with his wings severed. The mortally wounded Jatayu passed away after conveying the information to Lord Rama and Lakshmana, who arrived there searching for Sita. It is believed that Lord Rama granted salvation (moksha) to Jatayu and performed the funerary rituals (Pithru Tharpanam) at this very spot.
Main Attractions and Features
Sri Rama Padam (Footprint of Lord Rama): There is a spot on top of the Jatayu Rock that bears the footprint of Lord Rama. Inside this footprint, a small water body can be seen that never dries up, even in peak summer. Devotees believe that this pool was created when Lord Rama shot an arrow into the rock to provide water to the thirsty Jatayu.
Kodandarama Deity: The main deity worshiped here is Lord Rama in his form holding a bow (Kodandaraman). As a temple that honors the memory of the ardent Rama devotee Jatayu, a large idol of Jatayu is also revered here.
Architectural Style: The temple has been constructed following traditional Thachu Sastram (Kerala traditional architecture). The temple complex is meticulously designed while fully preserving the natural formation of the rock.
For Visitors
The serene atmosphere on the hilltop and the expansive panoramic views from the summit offer a refreshing and peaceful experience for both devotees and tourists alike. Most people who visit the Jatayu Earth's Center also make it a point to offer prayers at this sacred shrine.
