The major places of worship in Chadayamangalam Grama Panchayat

 

1)Jatayu Para Shree Kodandarama Temple   

               It is rare in Kerala to find another place so deeply intertwined with Ramayana mythology. Located near the Jatayu Para in Chadayamangalam, this temple is also a favorite spot for tourists.

The Salvation of Jatayu (Jatayu Moksham): It is believed that this rock is where Jatayu fell with his wings clipped while trying to stop Ravana as he was abducting Goddess Sita. According to legend, when Shri Rama arrived, Jatayu breathed his last after giving him information about Sita, and Shri Rama himself granted salvation (Moksha) to Jatayu.

The Footprint of Rama (Rama Padam): A large mark believed to be the footprint of Shri Rama can be seen on top of the rock.

Kokkarani: There is a water spring on top of this rock that never dries up, even during summer. It is believed that this water source was created by Shri Rama shooting his arrow when Jatayu felt thirsty.

2) Shree Kunjayyappa Swamy Temple

            Shree Kunjayyappa Swamy Temple (Pattupurakkal) is a highly renowned pilgrimage center located at Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district of Kerala. Having a close resemblance to the rituals and architectural styles of the Sabarimala Temple, this temple is popularly known as the 'Sabarimala of Women'. The main deity of this temple is Lord Ayyappa (Kunjayyappan). According to local legends, this region holds great significance in stories connected to Chadayamangalam Jatayu Para and Lord Rama's exile (Vanavasam). The defining features of this temple are its serene atmosphere and surroundings that offer peace to devotees. Women of all ages can observe the traditional vows (Vratam) just like in Sabarimala, carry the sacred travel bag (Irumudikkettu), and offer prayers here. Similar to Sabarimala, the 'Pathinettam Thrippadi' (the sacred 18 steps) has been constructed here for devotees to climb and seek blessings. The most important festival celebrated at this temple is the Makaravilakku Mahotsavam.

3) Shree Major Mahadeva Temple Chadayamangalam

       Shree Major Mahadeva Temple is an ancient and famous Hindu place of worship located at Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district of Kerala. It is a beautiful temple built in the traditional Kerala architectural style. A major attraction here is the majestic bronze Dhvajaprathishta (flagstaff) standing proudly at the eastern entrance (Kizhakke Nada). Under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board, this temple has been accorded 'Major' status considering its historical and administrative significance.

  • Main Deity: Lord Shiva (Mahadeva) facing east.

  • Sub-deities (Upadevathas): Lord Ganesha and Serpent Deities (Naga Gods).

4)   Thiruvaaikkodu Sree Mahavishnu Temple

        Thiruvaaikkodu Sree Mahavishnu Temple is a major place of worship located at Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district. It is known for its serene and beautiful atmosphere. Various pujas and offerings are performed here in accordance with the beliefs of the devotees. Main Deity: The main deity of this temple is Lord Mahavishnu in a Chaturbahu form (with four arms). Sub-deities (Upadevathas): Lord Ganesha, Lord Shasta (Ayyappan), Bhagavathi (Goddess), and Serpent Deities (Naga Gods) are the main sub-deities here. The temple functions under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board. Festivals: The annual Thiruvutsavam (temple festival) of this temple is very famous. 5) Poredam Major Mahadeva Temple

                       Poredam Major Mahadeva Temple is an ancient place of worship located in a village called Poredam near Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district. Main Deity: Lord Shiva (Mahadeva). Sub-deities (Upadevathas): Just like in standard Shiva temples, the main sub-deities here are Lord Ganesha and Lord Dharma Shasta. This major temple functions under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board. Festival: The annual festival of the Poredam temple is very famous. The flag hoisting (Kodiyettu) takes place on the Avittam asterism (nakshatra) in the Malayalam month of Medam. It is a grand festival that lasts for 13 days.

6) Panayil Shree Maheshwari Devi Temple 

                    Panayil Shree Maheshwari Devi Temple is located on the Poonkodu - G.E.M.S (GEMS) Road near Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district. Situated in a calm and scenic environment, this temple is an important Hindu place of worship in the locality. Deity: Shree Maheshwari Devi. Main Offerings (Vazhipadukal): Bhagavathi Seva, Payasam, Pushpanjali, etc. Special Days: Tuesdays and Fridays hold great importance. The Navaratri festival is celebrated here on a grand scale.

8) Chadayamangalam Juma Masjid

 

           Chadayamangalam Juma Masjid is a major place of worship located at Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district. It serves as a principal center for the local Islamic community to gather and perform the Friday Jumu'ah prayers. In addition to providing prayer facilities, religious matters and social services are conducted here under the leadership of the Mahal Jamaat Committee.

9) Juma Masjid Poredam

                  Juma Masjid Poredam is a prominent place of worship located near Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district of Kerala. This mosque is situated on the road leading from Chadayamangalam to Pallikkal (Chadayamangalam - Pallikkal Road). It is only about 1.5 kilometers away from Chadayamangalam town. Basic facilities, including restrooms and a Wudu facility (ablution pond/area), are available for the believers visiting the mosque.

Opening Hours: The mosque remains open at all times for the five daily prayers and the Friday Jumu'ah prayer.

10)  Madannada Juma Masjid 

 

The prominent place of worship known as Madannada Juma Masjid is located near Chadayamangalam in the Kollam district. Believers who have visited here testify that the mosque has a very serene and prayerful atmosphere. Facilities such as restrooms and a Wudu (ablution) area are provided for those visiting the mosque. Generally, this mosque remains open until 9:00 PM at night.
