Right to Information Act

                                  Right to Information Act 2005

The Right to Information Act is an important legal mechanism that enables citizens to access information from government institutions. The Act ensures the right of citizens to seek and obtain information in order to promote transparency and accountability in administration.

Under the Right to Information Act, the public can request information held by or under the control of a public authority. For this purpose, an application must be submitted before the designated Public Information Officer / Assistant Public Information Officer in the concerned departments. The application fee of ten rupees can be paid via court fee stamp, chalan, bank check, or pay order. The application must be submitted to the Public Information Officer of the specific department/office from which the information is required. A complaint can be filed with the Information Commission if no mechanism has been set up to accept applications, if a reply is not received within 30 days, or if the applicant feels that an unfair fee has been charged.
