Waste Management- Legal Provisions
Waste management is an essential process for environmental protection and public health. By scientifically segregating and processing biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, it is possible to prevent diseases and reduce environmental pollution.
Main Waste Management Methods
Segregation at Source: Separate waste at the point of generation into organic (decomposable) and inorganic waste (plastic, paper, glass, etc.).
Biodegradable Waste Management:
Composting: The method of converting kitchen waste and organic waste into manure.
Biogas Plant: Producing cooking gas and high-quality organic manure from biodegradable waste.
Vermi-composting: A method of rapidly producing compost using earthworms.
Non-biodegradable Waste Management:
Recycling: Collecting plastic, paper, and metals to hand over for recycling.
Haritha Karma Sena: In Kerala, the Haritha Karma Sena functions through Local Self-Government Institutions to collect non-biodegradable waste.
The 3R Principle
The most important aspect of waste management is following the principles of Reduce (reduce usage), Reuse (use again), and Recycle (make recyclable).
