                             🌿  Haritha Karma Sena

A People’s Initiative in Sanitation and Waste Management

Haritha Karma Sena is an initiative working in the field of sanitation and waste management under the Local Self-Government Institutions (LSGIs) in Kerala. Haritha Karma Senas were formed in Local Self-Government Institutions in 2017 as part of the Haritha Keralam Mission implemented by the Government of Kerala.

As per Government orders, Haritha Karma Sena members directly collect non-biodegradable waste (and, in some places, biodegradable waste as well) from households and institutions by collecting the user fee fixed by the respective Local Self-Government Institutions for the service.

The non-biodegradable waste collected at regular intervals is transported to the Material Collection Facility (MCF). There, the waste is segregated and sent to the Resource Recovery Facility (RRF), after which it is handed over for reuse or recycling.

As part of these activities, Haritha Karma Sena also provides methods and solutions for the management of biodegradable waste generated in households.

The Haritha Keralam Mission, Kudumbashree, Suchitwa Mission, Clean Kerala Company, and Local Self-Government Institutions are all partners in this comprehensive waste-management initiative.

Through the Haritha Karma Sena system, tons of waste are processed across the state. Haritha Karma Sena strives to achieve self-sufficiency by producing new products from waste, promoting recycling, and initiating innovative green enterprises.

Haritha Karma Sena is an initiative operating in the sanitation and waste management sector across the Local Self-Government Institutions (LSGIs) of Kerala. Formed in 2017 as part of the 'Haritha Kerala Mission' project implemented by the Government of Kerala, these green task forces function within local self-government bodies.

In accordance with government orders, Haritha Karma Sena members directly collect non-biodegradable waste (and in some locations, biodegradable waste as well) from households and establishments by collecting a user fee determined by the local bodies.

At present, more than 36,000 Haritha Karma Sena members are working across Local Self-Government Institutions throughout the state. The required basic infrastructure, vehicles, uniforms, identity cards, and other facilities are provided under the leadership of the respective Local Self-Government Institutions.
